We know that women made up a significant part of Renaissance theater audiences but how might they have read the plays presented there? This book uses the writings of sixteenth and seventeenth century women to construct a feminist perspective on drama by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Middleton, Ford, and their contemporaries.

Chapters are arranged thematically on key issues or genres. Women’s religious compositions open up readings of plays like “Doctor Faustus” and “Measure for Measure” as interrogations of conventional beliefs which underpinned relations between men and women. Chapter 2 considers drama from across the period, including “The Spanish Tragedy, The Revenger’s Tragedy” and “The Maid’s Tragedy,” to show how revenge tragedy taps into deep fears and desires about women’s agency and maternal power. Comedy, the female romantic quest, and the city as a site of female pleasure, are examined in diverse texts such as “All’s Well That Ends Well, The Duchess of Malfi, The Roaring Girl” and “Epicoene.” Chapter 4 focuses on the household space as a specifically female form of imprisonment, analyzing “Romeo and Juliet, Arden of Faversham, The Tragedy of Mariam” and “The Changeling” and other domestic tragedies in the light of Renaissance women’s experiences. The final chapter discusses queenship, subjects and women’s interventions into masculine history.

This volume of essays, now available in paperback, explores the fascinating and immensely rich legacy of Irish women playwrights throughout the twentieth century and opens up essential dialogue on the politics of authorship, representation and the ‘canon’ of Irish theatre. Ideological, historical and cultural issues are discussed in relation to the performance of woman, gender, sexuality and the body on the Irish stage in plays by women and, to a lesser extent, by men. An appendix lists over two hundred Irish women playwrights and their works, contesting the traditional concept of Irish theatre as primarily a site of male authorship and authority. In this book unknown territories are discovered and familiar ones are renegotiated, as the histories of Irish theatre are expanded, challenged and critiqued. “Women in Irish Drama” opens a space for previously forgotten or silenced voices and marks an exciting new beginning for the way in which Irish theatre is considered in the twenty-first century.

Identifying the stage as a primary site for erotic display, these essays take eroticism in Renaissance culture as a paradigm for issues of sexuality and identity in early modern culture. Contributors examine how the Renaissance stage functioned as a decoder for erotic experience, both reinforcing and subverting expected sexual behaviour. They argue that the dynamics of theatrical eroticism served to deconstruct gender definitions, leaving conventional categories of sexuality blurred, confused – or absent.
In seeking to reposition the conventions and subversions of gender and desire in terms of one another, these essays open up an attractive and distinctive perspective in cultural debate.

How was it possible for drama, especially biblical representations, to appear in the Christian West given the church’s condemnation of the “theatrum” of the ancient world? In a book with radical implications for the study of medieval literature, Lawrence Clopper resolves this perplexing question.
“Drama, Play, and Game” demonstrates that the “theatrum” repudiated by medieval clerics was not “theater” as we understand the term today. Clopper contends that critics have misrepresented Western stage history because they have assumed that “theatrum” designates a place where drama is performed. While “theatrum” was thought of as a site of spectacle during the Middle Ages, the term was more closely connected with immodest behavior and lurid forms of festive culture. Clerics were not opposed to liturgical representations in churches, but they strove ardently to suppress May games,” ludi,” festivals, and liturgical parodies. Medieval drama, then, stemmed from a more vernacular tradition than previously acknowledged-one developed by England’s laity outside the boundaries of clerical rule.
“Drama, Play, and Game” also explores the antitheatrical milieu in which this tradition developed. Clopper reads the” Tretise of Miraclis Pleyinge”-thought to be the only sustained attack on theater between late antiquity and the Puritan period-as an assault not on religious drama but on various forms of “ludi inhonesti,” He then argues that “ludi” varied widely in England depending on the participants’ clerical or lay status and on where the “ludi” were performed. Clopper provides profiles of ludic practices in a variety of venues: monasteries and churches, aristocratic houses, cities and towns, parishes, and the countryside.
Moving from consideration of why dramas developed in some cities and towns and not others, Clopper considers finally the “matter” of surviving plays-the kind of information that gets into them and the anxieties they display-and questions whose interests the plays represented. He argues ultimately that clerical indifference and growing distaste for vernacular drama engendered a reaction from lay people who institutionalized themselves in guilds to assert their own political power, flaunt the prestige of urban life, and take advantage of new commercial opportunities.

Provides a cultural and historical context for medieval popular drama.

In Drama and Resistance, Claire Sponsler explores the intertwined histories of bodily subjectivity, commodity culture, and theatricality in late medieval England. In a fascinating consideration of popular drama in the period from 1350 to 1520, she argues that many types of performances during this time represented cultural evasions of the imposition of disciplinary power.

The medieval theater was a social site where resistance, masked from the full scrutiny of authority by theatricality, was practiced, articulated, and enacted. Sponsler examines three key discourses of authoritarian bodily and commodity control — clothing laws, conduct literature, and Books of Hours — and pairs them with three kinds of theatrical performances that enact resistance to disciplining codes — Robin Hood performances, morality plays, and Corpus Christi pageants. She considers the contradictions and inconsistencies in the repressive official discourses and analyzes the ways in which the staging of forbidden acts like cross-dressing, social and sexual misbehavior, and violence against the body challenged these discourses.

Drawing on recent social theory, Drama and Resistance is an important contribution to medieval studies and the history of theater.

“The Theatre of the Real: Yeats, Beckett, and Sondheim” traces the thread of “jouissance” (the simultaneous experience of radical pleasure and pain) through three major theatre figures of the twentieth century. Gina Masucci MacKenzie’s work engages theatrical text and performance in dialogue with the Lacanian Real, so as to re-envision modern theatre as the cultural site where author, actor, and audience come into direct contact with personal and collective traumas. By showing how a transgressively free subject may be formed through theatrical experience, MacKenzie concludes that modern theatre can liberate the individual from the socially constructed self. “The Theatre of the Real” revises views of modern theatre by demonstrating how it can lead to a collaborative effort required for innovative theatrical work. By foregrounding Yeats’s “dancer” plays, the author shows how these intimate pieces contribute to the historical development of musical as well as modern theatre. Beckett’s universal dramas then pave the way for Sondheim’s postmodern cacophonies of idea and spirit as they introduce comic abjection into modernism’s tragic mode. This exciting work from a new author will leave readers with fresh insight to theatrical performance and its necessity in our lives.

While the plays of classical France achieve an unprecedented scenic perfection, what ultimately distinguishes classical drama is its unique awareness of its literary properties: the canny excavation of its resources as the site, instrument, and product of a concerted act of writing. But this self-conscious literariness also bears witness to the era’s corollary awareness of the predicament in which even great art works stand as the occasion and counterpart of a critical, often ironic act of reading. In “inventing,” that is, creating and discovering, the text as a vehicle of self-determining authorship, the “grands classiques” simultaneously invent the key critical insights shaping the methods we ourselves bring to bear on the poetic monuments they have left us. The literary monument thereby becomes its own “indiscernible counterpart,” deliberately engaging what, in theory, ought to escape it–the deconstructive “other” only another contrives to see.

The representation and experience of embodiment is a central preoccupation of Samuel Becketta (TM)s drama, one that he explored through diverse media. McMullan investigates the full range of Becketta (TM)s dramatic canon for stage, radio, television and film, including early drama, mimes and unpublished fragments. She examines how Becketta (TM)s drama composes and recomposes the body in each medium, and provokes ways of perceiving, conceiving and experiencing embodiment that address wider preoccupations with corporeality, technology and systems of power. McMullan argues that the body in Becketta (TM)s drama reveals a radical vulnerability of the flesh, questioning corporeal norms based on perfectible, autonomous or invulnerable bodies, but is also the site of a continual reworking of the self, and of the boundaries between self and other. Becketta (TM)s re-imagining of the body presents embodiment as a collaborative performance between past and present, flesh and imagination, self and other, including the spectator / listener.
