Wizard 6 describes my tour of duty as a psychiatrist assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam during 1969 and 1970. It was another existence. We referred to home as “the world….” As with any combat environment, there was the irorry of military psychiatrists helping men adjust to a crazy place. In 1969 six psychiatrists were assigned to combat divisions in Vietnam, charged with treating soldiers showing psychiatric symptoms in order to get them back into battle. Doug Bey, whose radio call name in the 1st Infantry Division was Wizard 6, was one of those psychiatrists. Drawing on graphic detail gleaned from a journal Bey transcribed when he got back stateside, this psychiatric specialist describes the daily life of a military support unit, the boredom and mind-numbing routine, but also the social issues and psychiatric crises he confronted. In Vietnam he treated people with a range of coping mechanisms, including counter phobic reactions, self-medication with drugs and alcohol, and “gross stress reaction,” as well as the gamut of psychiatric illnesses. Each month Bey and his staff saw some four hundred men, including characters like the Vietnam equivalent of Klinger from MASH, a Killer dentist, soldiers addicted to killing, and others who did not want to go home. He witnessed firsthand black pride, Vietnamese prejudice, racial conflict, and the Viet Cong’s fear of mental illness. Bey’s book provides a rare and powerful account that views the immediacy of combat from the perspective of thirty-five years in psychiatric practice and extensive study of combat and post-combat psychology. Wizard 6 offers new perspectives on the Vietnam war and its after-math and draws cautiouscomparisons with the issues today’s troops may face both in the field and when they return home.

Poverty and prosperity, fear and fun, mistakes, corruption, incompetence, language and cultural glitches, and developmental successes-the author recounts his government service on six continents in a 34-year career. Take one Pennsylvania-born, university-trained development economist, mix with the people, problems, and opportunities of 43 countries, stir in a variety of U.S. government programs, and you can learn a lot. Howard Steele certainly did, and survived gun-toting Bolivian revolutionaries, Viet Cong mortar and rifle fire, deadly anarchy in Sri Lanka, a shakedown by Tanzanian police, Taiwanese cockroaches the size of kittens, and sheep’s eye stew in Saudi Arabia. Marriage survival was more difficult. As Steele advanced from midlevel technician to a senior rank U.S. representative, he at times had to battle his own government and navigate its bureaucracy, just as he did with dozens of overseas regimes and their national cultures. From Brazil, just after its 1964 revolution, to Switzerland in 1995-with assignments in South Vietnam, Guatemala, Bolivia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Nepal, among numerous others along the way-Steele recounts his service on six continents in a 34-year career. He tells it as it happened, no partisan spin, all authentic, on-the-scene detail. Poverty and prosperity, fear and fun, mistakes, corruption, incompetence, language and cultural glitches, and developmental successes are all here.

The author recounts his government service on six continents and 43 countriesin his 34-year career.

Based on the journal Ronnau kept in Vietnam, this chronicle offers a gripping, heart-wrenching, and achingly true account of an infantryman’s tour of duty in a war zone, while also acting as a stirring testimony to the quiet courage of those unsung American heroes. photos. Original.
BAPTISM BY FIRE
Chris Ronnau volunteered for the Army and was sent to Vietnam in January 1967, armed with an M-14 rifle and American Express traveler’s checks. But the latter soon proved particularly pointless as the private first class found himself in the thick of two pivotal, fiercely fought Big Red One operations, going head-to-head against crack Viet cong and NVA troops in the notorious Iron Triangle and along the treacherous Cambodian border near Tay Ninh.
Patrols, ambushes, plunging down VC tunnels, search and destroy missions-there were many ways to drive the enemy from his own backyard, as Ronnau quickly discovered. Based on the journal Ronnau kept in Vietnam, Blood Trails captures the hellish jungle war in all its stark life-and-death immediacy. This wrenching chronicle is also stirring testimony to the quiet courage of those unsung American heroes, many not yet twenty-one, who had a job to do and did it without complaint-fighting, sacrificing, and dying for their country.
Includes sixteen pages of rare and never-before-seen combat photos

About the Author :

Christopher Ronnau has contributed to Blood Trails: The Combat Diary of a Foot Soldier in Vietnam as an author.
After a medical discharge for wounds received in Vietnam and a lengthy recuperation at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, Christopher Ronnau returned to Southern California. After college and medical school, he worked as an emergency room physician and director in St. Louis, Missouri, for more than twenty years. In 2002 he returned to Long Beach, where he now lives and writes.

Two days after Saigon fell to the communists, Hoa Minh Truong walked along the path leading to the Tan Xuyen village council. He had been there many times during his army service but this time he was filled with fear. The extra-tight security included a young Viet Cong trooper who clutched a Russian-made AK-47 automatic rifle in his small hands. The gun was just one of many multi-death tools supplied in the name of revolution by the major communist powers to Vietnam’s communists. The trooper could not have been more than fifteen years old. In the yard next to the building Hoa noticed a huge heap of uniforms, helmets, boots, belts and ammunition. All of these items had been dumped there when the South Vietnam government surrendered and ordered its forces to disarm. Hoa was on the losing side of the war for reasons that, to him, remained unclear and unacceptable. Now, he and many thousands of others were being forced into so-called re-education camps. Held there without trial, these prisoners faced terrible conditions and cruel punishments. Many did not survive, but Hoa did. In this remarkable book, he offers his story to the world. Author Hoa Minh Truong is a well-published author of fiction, non-fiction and poetry in the Vietnamese language. He now lives in Perth, Australia with his wife and daughter.

A compelling story of a young man’s personal growth and maturation as he engages the challenges presented him during his eight years in the Marine Corps concluding with his experiences in the Vietnam War. In 1960 after graduating from Marshall College, unsure of himself, his future opportunities, and manhood, he decided to become a Marine Officer, believing the training would provide the character building, discipline, and self-confidence necessary for his personal growth. Starting with an introspective view of why he chose that destiny, we follow his experiences and observations, as he makes his way through the Marine way of life as an Infantry Officer. All of this is only a prologue of what was to come, while he served as a thirty year old Rifle Company Commander, in combat, during the Vietnam War in 1967. Official Military archival information is presented with his personal recollections on the unorthodox methods and tactics Mike Company, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division employed to “win their war” against both the Viet Cong and North Vietnam regular army. We hear his fears, poor judgment, and ultimate successes, while learning of the people who influenced his life and Rite of Passage through the United States Marine Corps.

Shot down and wounded in action, Craig Roberts survived against fantastic odds in the sultry jungles of Vietnam, receiving ten decorations. His memoir is a story of extraordinary challenges met for honor, freedom, and the Corps. Reissue.
FROM RAW RECRUIT TO COMBAT HERO

In July 1965, Pfc. Craig Roberts crossed the Da Nang River with the 9th Marines — into the heart of a jungle alive with savage Viet Cong. Eight months later his unit would be called…

THE WALKING DEAD

In constant danger, they flushed the enemy from tunnels and rat traps; defused lethal mines, punji pits, and trip wires; and scored countless hits in ambushes, sweeps, and all-out firefights. From booby-trapped villages to battles at Cam Ne, Le Son, the Phong Le Bridge, and in “Operation Starlight,” they shared incredible risks, comradeship, and pride. Now Roberts tells the gripping tale of their war.

Shot down and rescued, wounded in action, Roberts survived against fantastic odds and served as an automatic rifleman, recon leader, sniper, and as an advisor to a Combined Action Company of ARVN Rangers. Transformed from an ordinary nineteen-year-old into a deadly killer, he was the recipient of ten decorations, including two Purple Hearts, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and a Combat Action Ribbon. His memoir is a story of extraordinary challenges met for honor, freedom, and the Corps.

“It felt as if I had been kicked in my face just like the day when my dad actually kicked me in my face in 1974. I could feel his foot in my face as the back of my head landed hard on the ground. As he threw me out of the house, he told me that he never wanted me and wished that the VCs would kill me. I feared for my life as I headed off to the jungle that day. I had no friend to come with me and no dog to guide me to the jungle. I was alone.” As a child, author Snow Nguyen suffered through the horrors of both the Vietnam War and severe child abuse. She endures the trauma of near capture by the Viet Cong and is abandoned in a field to die. Nguyen also copes with abuse at the hands of her father. When Nguyen’s family flees from Qui Nhon, they land in California, eventually settling in Los Angeles. “A Survivor’s Tale” shares all of Nguyen’s life experiences. Glimpse into village life as her people try to live normally in the midst of war. Feel her pain as she watches villagers die in front of her in Vietnam and at sea as she and her people flee to a new land. Follow her every move as she lives and grows up in her new country, attempting to overcome past obstacles.

A few years ago I read, with great interest, and sadness, the story of the war dogs of Vietnam. Although they were responsible for saving the lives of many American soldiers, they were forgotten by our government at the end of the war, and cast aside as nothing more than equipment. I vowed to herald the silent voices of these courageous and forgotten animal heroes through education and the promotion of memorials and commemorative postage stamps. Mine is but a small voice, yet a voice, for the thousands of service animals that have sacrificed their lives, in silence, for our freedom during times of war. These are the silent voices that must be heard. Many people have asked me if I have personally interviewed war dog handlers. The answer is yes. But they were too disheartened to revive the tragic events of their canine companions. So in respect to them I use the stories that others have been fortunate enough to hear. And I share them with those that have chosen to remain silent. May America listen. . . Throughout history, and during every modern war, soldiers have served as dog handlers. The bond created between dog and man became a relationship and memorable experience like no other. In the course of the Vietnam War an estimated ten thousand American potential casualties (or seventeen per cent of the total fifty-eight thousand American fatalities) were prevented as a result of the four thousand canine soldiers. Only two hundred sixty-one dog handlers were killed in action. In many instances the dogs prevented soldiers from triggering a booby trap or stepping on a land mine. They also alerted their handlers to hidden enemy soldiers as far as a thousand yards away. The canine warriorsdetected underwater saboteurs by the smell of their breath from the reeds they used as snorkels. Some dogs even covered their handlers with their own bodies to protect them from gunfire and shrapnel, while losing their own lives in return. Former dog handler, Charlie Cargo, tells of the day his dog Wolf, a German Shepherd, refused to allow him to proceed any further up the trail. “I looked straight ahead and not more than two feet away was a trip wire. I would have died right there if he hadn’t found the wire.” The amazing stories of canines saving American soldiers in Vietnam goes on and on. From 1960 to 1975 Vietnam became one of the longest and most unpopular wars ever fought by the American armed forces. Unfortunately many of our heroic soldiers returned home abandoned and unrecognized. And much like their human counterparts, many of the Vietnam canine veterans also received a different kind of homecoming. Fewer than two hundred of the four thousand canine soldiers were returned home. Of the tens of thousands of missions logged by the four thousand American war dogs in Vietnam, some three hundred twenty-five died in the line of duty, while approximately six hundred succumbed to tropical disease. The team was so effective that the Viet Cong offered a bounty for dead dogs or their handlers. What happened to the remaining seventy-two percent of these heroic dogs?

In 1967, the Highway Platoon of B Company, 504th MP Battalion worked out of Pleiku in the central highlands of South Vietnam. Each day the platoon’s patrols were scattered over nearly seventy miles of road. The men of the platoon worked with weapons that they had never been trained to use, and they did a job that they had never been trained to do. What they lacked in training they made up for in spirit, ingenuity, and courage. They learned from experience as they did the job, and they did the job well. In the Autumn of 1967 the Viet Cong hit the highland roads hard, and they did not stop hitting them. When the time came to fight, the men of the Highway Platoon did that well too.
