This Book is nicely written but this Indian version is not as expected. In book it is clearly mentioned that the colour used in diagrams have their specific representations but this version of book do not have any colour diagram. Rest its fine..

Peter Evans offers a new vision of why state involvement works in some cases and produces disasters in others. To illustrate, he looks at how state agencies, local entrepreneurs, and transnational corporations shaped the emergence of computer industries in Brazil, India, and Korea during the seventies and eighties.
In recent years, debate on the state’s economic role has too often devolved into diatribes against intervention. Peter Evans questions such simplistic views, offering a new vision of why state involvement works in some cases and produces disasters in others. To illustrate, he looks at how state agencies, local entrepreneurs, and transnational corporations shaped the emergence of computer industries in Brazil, India, and Korea during the seventies and eighties.

Evans starts with the idea that states vary in the way they are organized and tied to society. In some nations, like Zaire, the state is predatory, ruthlessly extracting and providing nothing of value in return. In others, like Korea, it is developmental, promoting industrial transformation. In still others, like Brazil and India, it is in between, sometimes helping, sometimes hindering. Evans’s years of comparative research on the successes and failures of state involvement in the process of industrialization have here been crafted into a persuasive and entertaining work, which demonstrates that successful state action requires an understanding of its own limits, a realistic relationship to the global economy, and the combination of coherent internal organization and close links to society that Evans called “embedded autonomy.”

One of the best books in Business Analysis

I started my career as a Business Analyst. I had completed my graduation by then. With almost 3 years of practicing Business Analysis, I felt that there were a number of areas which required improvement, both in the software as well as software processes. I did not know what techniques to apply by then. I referred to BABOK and PMBOK guide to get more understanding. The guides were with full of information and on going deeper, my interest arose on being a better Business Analyst which got tightly coupled with Project Management. What I wanted to know now were the best practices used in this field. This is where I came across this book.
The book, although written from the view point of CIO, does very well address the basis of being a Business Analyst. The author, Pradeep Hari Pendse, covers the most practical approaches used in this field. I applied some of those techniques and found success. For example, the CSF & KPI technique helped me to envisage and make better software. This technique, as I understood in my organization, is used by Senior Managers and Board of Directors for ensuring the success of the company. Similarly other techniques such as Zachmann’s Framework, Gartner’s Hype Curve has also helped in visualizing better system processes for developing valuable software solutions. Certain live scenarios are also presented for which the author makes the readers understand as to how a particular technique is to be used and applied. Even the points to be taken care during User interaction & design is also covered, as this is the make or break situation for a product when it goes for implementation. This I did not see in other books. Like this, there are a lot of other successful techniques which are to be explored in this book.
To summarize, this is a very well written book, covering the most highly and successful practical approaches towards Business Analysis. I recommend this book even for beginners in this field.
