“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.”
The great Biblical flood so described in Genesis has long been a subject of fascination and speculation. In the 19th century the English archbishop James Ussher established it as having happened in the year 2348 B.C., calculating what was then taken as the age of the earth and working backward through the entire series of Biblical “begats.” Proof of the flood, which is an element of so many creation myths, began in earnest when archaeology started connecting physical evidence with Biblical story. The dream of proving the Bible as literal truth has proven irresistible, producing both spurious claims and serious scholarship.
As best-selling historian Ian Wilson reveals in this fascinating new book, evidence of a catastrophic event has been building steadily, culminating in the work of William Ryan and Walter Pitman. Several years ago Ryan and Pitman had posited that around 5600 BC there had an inundation in the Black Sea of such proportions that it turned the freshwater lake into a saltwater lake by connecting it to the Mediterranean. Were that true, they estimated that there would be signs of civilization 300 feet below the surface of the Black Sea. In September 2000, using his famous underwater equipment, Robert Ballard (of SS Titanic fame) explored parts of the Black Sea near the Turkish shore and found the remains of wood houses. There had been a flood, and whether God’s wrath or not it had destroyed everything aroundit for hundreds of miles, killing tens of thousands of people.
Exploring all the archeological evidence, Wilson explains how the Black Sea flood and the Biblical flood have to be connected. In particular, Wilson argues, learnedly and persuasively, that the center of the civilized world was further to the West than previously thought-not in Egypt or Mesopotamia but in what is today Northern Turkey.
The earliest, antediluvian civilizations may have migrated east into those places we have come to call the cradles of civilization, forced by the Black Sea flood to create new settlements.
Scrupulous in its details and compelling in its sweep, “Before the Flood” is narrative detective history at its most provocative, contributing a vital new chapter to the debate about the Bible and origins of the modern world.

Graffiti incised on the roof blocks of the temple of Khonsu at Karnak, written in the hieroglyphic, hieratic, and Demotic scripts and accompanied by the outlines of pairs of feet, caught the eye of Champollion and other early voyagers who succeeded in clambering up onto that part of the roof still remaining over the colonnade of the first court. Such graffiti have usually been interpreted as mementos left by ancient visitors passing through Thebes. A complete survey of all the graffiti on the roof and a detailed study of the inscriptions, carried out over a considerable period of time, has revealed the unexpected fact that far from being casual tourists, it was mostly the priestly personnel of the temple itself whose graffiti have been preserved there. The inscriptions record the name and titles of the person whose footprints are depicted, as well as the name of his father and sometimes that of his grandfather, but only in three cases does the name of his mother appear. Prayers addressed mainly to Khonsu himself demonstrate the firm belief of these priestly servitors in the lasting protection afforded them by the god in whose sacred precinct their graffiti have been carved. One of the most original groups of graffiti is that connected with the family of one Djedioh, whose inscriptions dating to the time of the Twenty-second Dynasty reveal the existence of a hitherto unknown king of that era named Iny. Other objects depicted among the graffiti are “portrait” heads, sacred barks, animals, birds, and architectural elements, almost all having some connection with the temple itself or with the cult of the god Khonsu. Several small crosses give witness to the reuse of the temple in Christiantimes as a church. The 334 graffiti recorded in the volume are richly illustrated by photographs and facsimile drawings. Transliterations, translations, line notes, and commentaries are provided. The text concludes with general, name, epithet, and title indices.

Could there be some sophisticated knowledge behind the designs of ancient monuments? Why would such a tremendous effort be made to construct huge mounds in North America, temples in South America, henges in Europe and the pyramids in Egypt when research shows that the structures were erected during desperate times of famine? Could the need to increase food production be the real purpose behind some of these structures? Burke and Halberg unravel the mysterious technology behind the ancient megaliths. The scientific findings point to the likelihood that these monuments were built for the use of amplifying naturally occurring electromagnetic fields in the earth in order to increase crop yields; a technology that has recently been replicated by modern science. Includes illustrations detailing their findings, dramatic photographs of electromagnetically charged orbs and maps of the locations of electromagnetic fields– many as close as a day trip away from anywhere in North America.

There are fundamental problems with the official version of ancient history. Why are Bible scholars unable to find any evidence of the exodus, and why is it that the annals of Israel nowhere resemble those of Egypt? Because historians look in the wrong place If we look for New York on the West Coast, we end up with a distorted picture. That is what happened to Egyptology. Pharaohs, dynasties and even kingdoms were assigned places where they do not belong. A number of scholars came to realize that ancient history is in dire need of revision. The reconstructed version of history drastically relocates Pharaohs to their proper places, and all of a sudden Old Testament history rings true. Add to this important archaeological finds, such as the location of the real Mt Sinai, still intact, and we arrive at an astounding conclusion: The fantastic stories of the Exodus and the events surrounding the giving of the law at Mount Horeb are true. It really happened. What cased these unusual events? There is a controversial theory that may or may not be true; it involved a cosmic catastrophe. This, combined with strange natural occurrences during the reigns of the Judean Kings, is the background of this book. It deals with the message of the Bible, redemption, and a possible solution to baffling historical puzzles. The theory of cosmic catastrophes may be difficult to accept, but it is worthy of consideration.

EGYPT / ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS”A startling new theory that brings to life the biblical world of Joseph and places it firmly in the lead-up to Ancient Egypt’s most controversial period of history.”Andrew Collins, author of From the Ashes of Angels and Gods of Eden”In The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt, Ahmed Osman single-handedly moves the goal posts of biblical scholarship. He successfully narrows the search for the historical Hebrew patriarchs by giving us a novel and persuasive case for a secret lineage of the patriarch Joseph. This is a ‘must read’ for all alternative history buffs and scholars alike.”Rand Flem-Ath, coauthor of When the Sky Fell and The Atlantis Blueprint.” . . a fascinating and thought-provoking read. It is thoroughly well researched and convincingly argued.”Graham Phillips, author of Atlantis and the Ten Plagues of EgyptWhen Joseph revealed his identity to his kinsmen who had sold him into slavery, he told them that God had made him “a father to Pharaoh.” Throughout the long history of ancient Egypt, only one man is known to have been given the title “a father to Pharaoh”–Yuya, a vizier of the Eighteenth Dynasty king Tuthmosis IV. Yuya has long intrigued Egyptologists because he was buried in the Valley of Kings even though he was not a member of the Royal House. His extraordinarily well-preserved mummy has a strong Semitic appearance, which suggests he was not of Egyptian blood, and many aspects of his burial have been shown to be contrary to Egyptian custom. As The Hebrew Pharaohs of Egypt shows, the idea that Joseph and Yuya may be one and the same person sheds a whole new light on the sudden rise of monotheism in Egypt, spearheaded by Queen Tiye and her son Akhenaten. It would clearly explain the deliberate obliteration of references to the “heretic” king and his successors by the last Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh, Horemheb, whom the author believes was the oppressor king in the Book of Exodus. Osman also draws on a wealth of detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place the time of the departure of the Hebrews from Egypt during the short reign of Ramses I, the first king of the Nineteenth Dynasty.AHMED OSMAN was born in Cairo in 1934 to Egyptian Muslim parents. He studied law at Cairo University and later worked as a journalist and playwright. Since 1965 he has lived in England. This project is the culmination of twenty-two years of writing and research. Osman is also the author of Moses and Akhenaten and Out of Egypt.

“This book is an inspiring achievement for both historians and citizens. A model of how to study antiquity, “Athenian Legacies” provides hope for the future of democratic practice and culture. It lays out clearly and concisely the political and ethical stakes of the discipline’s questions and methodologies, fleshes out the conceptual content and stakes of Athenian institutions, and offers a theoretically rich picture not of how Athens came to be a democracy but of how it stayed a democracy.”–Danielle Allen, University of Chicago

“Josiah Ober has a special skill of integrating historical studies with the large theoretical questions concerning the potentialities of a democratic regime. He does not imagine the simplistic imposition of ancient political practices in the contemporary world, but shows in imaginative ways the profound theoretical concerns that emerge from a careful investigation of the conditions and practices of ancient Athens in particular. The ancient world comes alive in Ober’s works as a prism through which we can understand the current challenges of self-government.”–Arlene W. Saxonhouse, University of Michigan
How do communities survive catastrophe? Using classical Athens as its case study, this book argues that if a democratic community is to survive over time, its people must choose to go on together. That choice often entails hardship and hard bargains. In good times, going on together presents few difficulties. But in the face of loss, disruption, and civil war, it requires tragic sacrifices and agonizing compromises.

“Athenian Legacies” demonstrates with flair and verve how the people of one influential political community rebuilt their democratic government, rewove their social fabric, and, through thick and thin, went on together. The book’s essays address amnesty, civic education, and institutional innovation in early Athens, a city that built and lost an empire while experiencing plague, war, economic trauma, and civil conflict.

As Ober vividly demonstrates, Athenians became adept at collective survival. They conjoined a cultural commitment to government by the people with new institutions that captured the social and technical knowledge of a diverse population to recover from revolution, foreign occupation, and the ravages of war. Ober provides insight into notorious instances of Athenian injustice, explaining why slaves, women, and foreign residents willingly risked their lives to support a regime in which they were systematically mistreated. He answers the question of why Socrates never left a city he said was badly governed.

At a time when social scientists debate the cultural grounding necessary to foster democracy, “Athenian Legacies” advances new arguments about the role of diversity and the relevance of shared understanding of the past in creating democracies thatflourish when the going gets rough.

Since the time of Plato, the fabled land of Atlantis has fired the imagination of those who sought to discover if this “lost continent” belonged to myth or history. Did it exist and, if so, where? What was the cause of its disappearance? Here is the full, first-hand account by the man that led the scientific expedition that found Atlantis and revealed the cause of its destruction–the greatest single natural disaster witnessed and recorded by humankind, a cataclysm so great that it left its indelible impact on the myths and legends of numerous cultures.Mavor’s expeditions, drawing on ancient records and myth, verify Plato’s recounting of lost Atlantis as well as the controversial theory of Greek seismologist Dr. Angelos Galanopoulus that the Minoan culture on the volcanic Aegean island of Thera was actually the Atlantis of ancient times. Mavor’s discovery of Atlantis inspired still ongoing research into catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions and floods. In his epilogue Mavor considers this research and the light it can shed on natural disasters and their possible origins in the wake of comets and asteroids passing the earth.Demystifying the legend of Atlantis, Mavor deftly brings into the realm of objective analysis a phenomenon that has for centuries been a parable for the evolution of human consciousness.

THE ROSETTA STONE has become an instantly recognizable icon of script and decipherment and is one of the most famous Egyptian antiquities in the world. Discovered by Napoleon’s troops at the village of Rosetta in the western Delta in 1799, the granitoid slab is a fragment of a stela inscribed with a priestly decree in honour of Ptolemy V. The main significance of the text lies not in its content, however, but in the fact that it is written in three scripts — hieroglyphic, demotic and ancient Greek.

RICHARD PARKINSON here tells the story of the Stone’s discovery and the so-called battle of the decipherers which it inspired. Early Orientalists recognized immediately the potential of the Stone for the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Thomas Young made great advances, especially with the demotic text, but it was Jean-Francois Champollion who made the final breakthrough in 1822. In so doing he cracked much more than two Egyptian scripts and opened up ancient Egyptian culture as a whole.

PUBLISHED TO ACCOMPANY A MAJOR EXHIBITION at the British Museum celebrating the bicentenary of the Stone’s discovery, and including a selective catalogue of the exhibits, this book also examines the wider issues of script and writing in ancient Egypt and beyond. Among the subjects discussed are the relationship between hieroglyphs and art, the social prestige of literacy, the power of writing, and the practical aspects of writing (scribal equipment and training). A brief description of other decipherments is also given, drawing on examples such as Linear B and Meroitic — a language which remains to be read.
