Data stream algorithms as an active research agenda emerged only over the past few years, even though the concept of making few passes over the data for performing computations has been around since the early days of Automata Theory. The data stream agenda now pervades many branches of Computer Science including databases, networking, knowledge discovery and data mining, and hardware systems. Industry is in synch too, with Data Stream Management Systems (DSMSs) and special hardware to deal with data speeds. Even beyond Computer Science, data stream concerns are emerging in physics, atmospheric science and statistics. Data Streams: Algorithms and Applications focuses on the algorithmic foundations of data streaming. In the data stream scenario, input arrives very rapidly and there is limited memory to store the input. Algorithms have to work with one or few passes over the data, space less than linear in the input size or time significantly less than the input size. In the past few years, a new theory has emerged for reasoning about algorithms that work within these constraints on space, time and number of passes. Some of the methods rely on metric embeddings, pseudo-random computations, sparse approximation theory and communication complexity. The applications for this scenario include IP network traffic analysis, mining text message streams and processing massive data sets in general. Data Streams: Algorithms and Applications surveys the emerging area of algorithms for processing data streams and associated applications. An extensive bibliography with over 200 entries points the reader to further resources for exploration.

This book provides a framework for application design, development and installation for the Palm handheld. It is written primarily for those who need to understand the strengths and limits of programming on the Palm, and how to integrate VB language Palm applications into their corporate IT infrastructure or product offerings.
Due to the immense popularity of Palm OS devices, demand for Palm OS applications has increased dramatically. Over 16 million Palm Powered PDAs have sold over the past six years, and the number of registered Palm Developers is currently over 100,000 and growing by about a 1,000 per month.

Visual Basic is one of the most popular development platformsin the world. Until recently Visual Basic developers were not able to create applications for the Palm OS platform. By integrating into the Visual Basic environment, the AppForge Basic compiler has brought Palm development right into the main tool used by millions of VB Programmers. In fact, Visual Basic in conjunction with AppForge is fast becoming one of the favorite development environments for the Palm OS.

The book provides a framework for application design, development and installation for the Palm handheld. While the reader should have experience with the property-method-event model of VB programming, no familiarity with Palm products is assumed or required. It is written primarily for corporate software developers, software architects, middle-ware developers and engineering managers who need to understand the strengths and limits of programming on the Palm, and how to integrate Visual Basic language Palm applications into their corporate IT infrastructure or product offerings. It teaches readers how to create a host of business applications including security, wireless and database connectivity programs.

Some of the covered topics include:

Complete coverage of Palm user interface and database programming techniques

Data Synchronization including how to build, test and install a conduit using Visual Basic andCOM

Web Clipping applications and how to interface those applications to Microsoft’s Active Server Page framework.

Extending the AppForge Palm application using shared libraries and Active-X like components.

“Programming Visual Basic for the Palm OS” is the only

book designed to help the Visual Basic desktop programmer to break into the Palm market. With “Programming Visual Basic for the Palm OS,” Visual Basic programmers can become Palm programmers almost over night.

“A comprehensive solution to the requirements challenges faced by every development team. Full of insight and ideas all developers can learn from.” –Ivar Jacobson “Many projects fail for the simple reason that the developers fail to build the right thing: They either deliver a system that does not meet the expectations of its intended users, or they deliver a system that focuses on secondary functions at the expense of its primary use. Drawing on their extensive experience, Dean and Don demonstrate how to employ an industrial-strength requirements process, one that helps ensure you will build the right thing. Developers of any kind of application should read this book.” –Grady Booch

Despite the wealth of development knowledge, experience, and tools generally available today, a substantial percentage of software projects continue to fail, often because requirements are not correctly determined and defined at the outset, or are not managed correctly as the project unfolds. Clients do not always know or express their needs precisely, and too often designers and developers do not ask the right questions at the right times. As a result, projects often spin out of control as “feature bloat” and shifting priorities cause budgets and schedules to exceed expectations. “Managing Software Requirements” focuses on this critical cause of failure and offers a practical, proven approach to building systems that meet customers’ needs–on time and within budget.

The authors are skilled practitioners who have spent their careers in the trenches building high-quality applications, including safety-critical, real-time systems. Using an informal, approachable style, their own war stories, and acomprehensive case study they show how designers and developers can effectively identify requirements by employing the power of use cases and more traditional forms of requirements expression. The book illustrates proven techniques for determining, implementing, verifying, and validating requirements. It describes six vital Team Skills for managing requirements throughout the lifecycle of a project: Analyzing the Problem, Understanding User Needs, Defining the System, Managing Scope, Refining the System Definition, and Building the Right System. “Managing Software Requirements specifically” addresses the ongoing challenge of managing change and describes a process for assuring that project scope is successfully defined and agreed upon by all stakeholders.

Topics covered include:

  • The five steps in problem analysis
  • Business modeling and system engineering
  • Techniques for eliciting requirements from clients, users, developers, and other stakeholders
  • Applying and refining use cases
  • Prototyping
  • Organizing and managing requirements information
  • Establishing project scope and managing customers
  • Using both informal and technical methods for specifying requirements
  • How to measure and improve the quality of your product’s requirements
  • Moving from requirements to implementation
  • Verifying and validating the system
  • Managing change

The book concludes with a step-by-step guide to incorporating these powerful techniques into future projects.

WebLogic Workshop (WLW) is BEAUs new tool that allows millions of developers access to the robustness of J2EE with only a basic foundation in Java coding. “BEA WebLogic Workshop” explores the features of WLW as it teaches developers to build J2EE applications.
BEA WebLogic Workshop is a rapid application development tool that makes building Java-based Web service applications simple. With just a basic foundation of Java programming, you can use WebLogic Workshop to develop Web services. “BEA WebLogic Workshop Kick Start” provides everything you need to get started with WebLogic Workshop, including a quick Java primer and appendixes covering the essentials of XML, SOAP and WSDL. Learn the features of WebLogic Workshop and review hundreds of code examples, and explore the inner workings of this new tool.

The book’s CD-ROM contains all the source code and examples from the book, plus a 90-day trial version of BEA WebLogic Platform, which includes WebLogic Workshop.

Foreword

Web services have attracted much attention recently as the next “big thing” in computing technology. Vendors of all shapes and sizes have announced their support for Web services technologies, and every month a new Web services conference is popping up somewhere on the globe. With all this hype and attention, sometimes it’s difficult to really discover what Web services are, where they fit in your company, what the business case is, and how you can actually get started taking advantage of this technology.

BEA has been working with customers to answer many of these questions, and provide solutions that enable companies to easily construct Web services that meet their needs today. Contrary to the common conception of Web services as a consumer-focused technology, Web services may have the greatest potential as a technology inside enterprises as a new way of tying disparate applications together using standards-based technologies. To make Web services really work inthe enterprise, however, it’s essential that they meet core enterprise requirements: Web services applications have to exist in a constantly changing IT environment where different applications are built and modified by different people on different schedules. They must accommodate everything from modern J2EE-based applications, to legacy systems, to applications at business partners. They must be able to handle rich and complex information and transmit it between internal and external applications. They must easily interact with other applications to leverage existing investments. They must be robust, reliable, and they must perform. Perhaps most important of all, they have to be easy to build. For Web services to flourish within an organization, all developers will need to be able to build Web services that meet these requirements.

“BEA WebLogic Workshop Kick Start” introduces you to BEA’s new WebLogic Workshop product, a development tool and runtime framework that makes it easy to build powerful Web services that take advantage of the robust, enterprise features of the WebLogic J2EE application server. WebLogic Workshop provides a graphical tool that makes it easy to visualize, develop, and test Web service applications and visual controls that dramatically simplify access to existing resources like databases, packaged applications, Enterprise Java Beans, and other Web services. The Workshop framework provides out-of-the-box support for building Web services that are loosely coupled so that the internal implementation details of an application can be cleanly separated from the “public contract” that a Web service offers to other applications. This makes Workshop Web servicesflexible in the face of a constantly changing IT environment. Workshop also provides built-in support for asynchronous messaging so that Web service applications can carry on rich, two-way conversations with their clients and accommodate interaction with legacy systems and human users. Finally, Workshop supports easy manipulation of coarse-grained messages so that rich documents can be handled without resorting to tedious XML DOM programming. All of these capabilities can be accessed in a simple, declarative fashion that enables all developers not just J2EE experts to get started building Web services today.

Even if you are new to the Java programming language, or have never built a J2EE application before, I think you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get started with Workshop. Working inside the WebLogic Workshop environment, you can focus on the procedural business code that is important to getting your applications built and leave all of the details of Web service and J2EE plumbing to the application framework. BEA WebLogic Workshop Kick Start will give you an introduction to Web services in general, and teach you the few Java and J2EE concepts you’ll need to know along the way. Rich with examples, this book illustrates the power of Web services, and will help you realize the value they can bring to your company.

–Carl Sjogreen, Product Manager, WebLogic Workshop, BEA Systems, Inc

Failed or abandoned software development projects cost the U.S. economyalone billions of dollars a year. In Software Development Failures, KwekuEwusi-Mensah offers an empirically grounded study that suggests why these failureshappen and how they can be avoided. Case studies analyzed include the well-knownConfirm travel industry reservation program, FoxMeyer’s Delta, the IRS’s Tax SystemModernization, the Denver International Airport’s Baggage Handling System, andCODIS.It has been estimated that one-third of software development projects fail orare abandoned outright because of cost overruns, delays, and reduced functionality. Some consider this an acceptable risk — that it is simply the cost of doingbusiness. Ewusi-Mensah argues that understanding the factors involved in developmentfailures will help developers and businesses bring down the rate of software failureand abandoned projects.Ewusi-Mensah explores the reasons software developmentprojects are vulnerable to failure and why issues of management and organization areat the core of any failed project. He examines these projects not from adeterministically technical perspective but as part of a complex technical andsocial process; he proposes a framework of factors that contribute to the decisionto abandon a project and enumerates the risks and uncertainties inherent in eachphase of a project’s life cycle. Exploring the multiplicity of factors that makesoftware development risky, he presents empirical data that is reinforced byanalyses of the reported cases. He emphasizes the role of the user in thedevelopment process and considers the effect of organizational politics on aproject. Finally, he considers what lessons can be learned from past failures andhow software development practices can be improved.

Web tier frameworks have soared in popularity over the past year or so due to the increasing complexity of Java itself, and the need to get more work done with fewer resources. Developers who used to spend hours and hours writing low-level features can use a well-written framework to build the presentation tier so they start coding the “good stuff” sooner–the business logic at the core of the program. The Jakarta Struts Framework is one of the most popular presentation frameworks for building web applications with Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages (JSP) technologies. If you work with the Struts Framework, then you know it speeds development time. You also know that many of its features are made up of components that are used repeatedly. Having to stop to check each component’s parameters and programming details can be a time waster. The answer? The “Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference,” This portable book gives you easy access to the facts you need to get your job done.

The “Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference” is a quick reference to all the core features of the Jakarta Struts framework. An excellent companion to “Programming Jakarta Struts,” the pocket reference contains detailed information on the extensive Struts tag libraries, which were described in less detail in the larger work as they were still in development at that time. This little book also provides convenient coverage of the following:

Configuration

Built-in Action classes

Action forms

Complete Tag Reference (struts 1.1)

and much more.

O’Reilly’s Pocket References have become a favorite among programmers everywhere. By providing a wealth of important details in a concise, well-organized format, thesehandy books deliver just what you need to complete the task at hand. When you’ve reached a sticking point and need to get to the answer quickly, the new “Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference” is the book you’ll want close at hand.

Foreword by Jim Foley In the past decade, high quality interfaces havebecome standard in a growing number of areas such as games and CD-ROM-basedencyclopedias. Yet the overwhelming majority of programmers edit their code using asingle font within a single window and view code execution via the hand insertion ofprint statements.Software Visualization (SV) redresses this imbalance by usingtypography, graphics, and animation techniques to show program code, data, andcontrol flow. This book describes the history of SV, techniques and frameworks forits construction, its use in education and program debugging, and recent attempts toevaluate its effectiveness. In making programming a multimedia experience, SV leavesprogrammers and computer science researchers free to explore more interesting issuesand to tackle more challenging problems.Contributors: Ronald Baecker, John Bazik, Alan Blackwell, Mike Brayshaw, Marc H. Written by members of the Apollo product team, this is the official guide to the Alpha release of Adobe Apollo, the new cross platform desktop runtime from Adobe Labs. Apollo for Adobe Flex Developers Pocket Guide explains how to build and deploy Flash-based Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) to the desktop using Adobe’s Flex framework. This book describes concisely how Apollo works, and offers numerous examples for those who want to start building RIAs for the desktop right away. Why put RIAs on the desktop? They’re already supposed to offer the responsiveness of desktop programs. Unfortunately, web browsers were designed to deliver and display HTML-based documents, not applications. The conflict between document- and application-focused functionality creates several problems when deploying applications via the browser. Adobe Apollo gives you the best of both worlds — the web development model and true desktop functionality. This pocket guide explains how to: Set up your development environment Create your first application Use the File I/O API Use HTML within Flex-based Apollo applications Use the included Apollo mini-cookbook for common tasks The book also includes a guide to Apollo packages, classes, and command-line tools. Once you understand the basics of building a Flex-based Apollo application, this pocket guide makes an ideal reference for tackling specific problems.
